18. (1) A person applying for registration as an
elector shall make and sign an application in the prescribed

form and shall if so required produce such evidence as the
registration officer may think necessary to verify and
substantiate any matter contained in the said application and
in particular, and without prejudice to the generality of the
foregoing provision, shall if called upon so to do, produce to
the registration officer evidence as to the date of his birth,
his nationality, his length of residence in the Colony, the
inclusion of his name on any Jury List and, in the case of a
statement as to a property qualification, evidence as to the
ownership or tenure of the property or the payment of rates
thereon during the qualifying period.
(2) A person applying for registration as an elector shall,
if required by the registration officer so to do, satisfy the
registration officer (through an interpreter if need be) that he
is able to read and write either the English or the Chinese
language and if the person fails so to satisfy the registration
officer he shall not be entitled to registration as an elector.

GENERAL
Voting by persons in employment of returning officer.

19. Where an elector for any constituency is employed by
the returning officer for any purpose in connection with an
election and the circumstances of that employment are, in the
opinion of the returning officer, such as to prevent him from
voting at the polling station at which the elector would
otherwise be entitled to vote, the returning officer may authorize
the elector, by a certificate given under his hand, to vote at
any other polling station in the constituency in respect of which
he is registered as an elector, and such other polling station
shall for all purposes be deemed to be the polling station
allotted to that elector.
